InDesign Character Styles: Underline Options
Mercedes
Created on May 15, 2024
The "Underline Options" feature allows you to underline specific text and customize the appearance of that underline. An underline is particularly useful when you want to subtly – or not so subtly – call out specific parts of your text.

The box toggles the Underline feature on and off. No matter what your settings are, if this is toggled OFF, the underline will not appear.
This is the thickness of the underline. The bigger the number, the bigger the underline.
This specifies the distance between the underline and the baseline of the text. By adjusting the offset, you can control the vertical positioning of the underline. Positive numbers push the underline down. Negative numbers push the underline up.
Choose your underline style (i.e. solid, dashed, dotted, double, or wavy lines).
Choose the color of your underline.
Adjusting the tint of your color will make your underline lighter.
Leave this as default. Checking this box means the underline fills will print on top of any underlying fills, preventing potential color shifts or gaps in the underlined text color of your underline.
Leave this as default. This setting specifies the color of the space between justified characters when the text is stretched or compressed to align with both the left and right margins.
The Underline Options Character Style settings can be used best to call out words or sentences within a paragraph.
