3/12
As you complete this simulation, you’re going to be working as a Graphic Designer for a creative agency. It’s your job to work with clients, understand their vision and bring their dreams to life. Let’s get started by meeting your client. Objective: Familiarise yourself with the client, including their product, goal and your initial ideas.
Preparation task (20 minutes):
Step one: Choose a product or service you would like to create a digital mockup for. You’ll find three choices below:
- A mobile fitness application for an expanding gym company. They’re looking for a workout and nutrition app providing fitness tips and guided exercises.
- A book recommendation website for a local bookseller, where users can find, share and rate books.
- Organic skincare packaging, for an eco-friendly, all-natural wellness brand.
1
Step two: Define a specific goal for your design:For example, redesigning the user interface of an existing mobile application to improve the user experience, or redesigning an existing website to better align with modern design trends to target a different audience.
2
Step three: Step three: Sketch out a basic idea. Using a design tool of your choice, create a rough outline of what you want your design to look like. Please note, if you would like tailored feedback, we recommend choosing the mobile fitness application option, as this is what our Graphic Design expert will be focusing on.

A successful Graphic Designer has a strong understanding of the industry they’re operating in. Understanding existing designs is just as important as ideating your own. So, now it’s time to familiarise yourself. Objective: Understand the existing designs and key design features within the industry of your chosen product. Step one: Conduct online research to gather inspiration and ideas. Look at existing designs within the industry that your chosen product or service belongs to. For example, for a book recommendation website, you might take a look at the Waterstones website or the GoodReads app. Step two: Understand key design features. Note down the colour schemes, typography, layout, and overall design elements that appeal to you and effectively communicate the purpose of the product.

Analysis task (20 minutes):
Step one: Detail how the designs found in your research work well for their intended purpose.
1
Attractive designs are one thing, but are your designs functional? The next stage of the process is to consider how your design choices will contribute to the success of your client’s product. Objective: critically analyse the functionality of your design decisions.
Step two: Based on the designs you’ve found in your research, evaluate which elements would work well for your own project.
2
Step three: Consider how you will attract and retain users’ attention. Identify which features you might adopt for this.
3
Step four: Break down your concept into aesthetic considerations, functionality and user interaction. Detail your choices and their justifications.

Create task (40 minutes):
Now, it’s time to get creative. Creating a digital mockup is a crucial part of being a Graphic Designer - it’s an opportunity to bring your ideas to life and create a visual representation of the final product. Objective: create a digital mockup to present to your client.
1
Step one: Use your chosen design tool to create a digital mockup based on your initial sketch and research analysis. Remember to pay attention to detail: Ensure the mockup is as detailed as possible and mimics a final product by applying appropriate colours, typography, images, and other design elements
8/12
Document & present (15 minutes):
1
It’s important to justify your choices as a Graphic Designer. Effectively communicating your process captures your thinking, design processes and demonstrates the true representation of your creative vision. Objective: create a presentation documenting your design process.
Step one: create a presentation, using a maximum of 4-5 slides, with the aim of presenting this to your client. Step two: Keep track of your design process, documenting the reason behind your design choices.
2
9/12
Reflection task (10 minutes):
Reflecting on a project upon completion will keep you continually growing as a Graphic Designer. Identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement ensures constant improvement. Objective: reflect on the process of creating a digital mockup.
1
Step one: answer the following questions:
- What did I learn about creating effective digital mockups?
- How can I apply these skills to future projects?
- What part of the process was the most challenging and how did I overcome it?
- What would I do differently next time?
