Awareness rising on the importance of a healthy lifestyle was a central element in most of the health programmes. Through our funding, 40 000 Roma in 90 marginalised communities in Bulgaria and Romania experienced reduced inequalities and increased awareness about their health issues, rights and services. In addition, the initiatives engaged over 300 doctors, nurses and health care specialists. This has contributed to improved health services, increased health literacy and reduced mutual mistrust between doctors and Roma patients.

The focus of the support has been on countries with sizeable Roma populations: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. We are the largest donor for Roma inclusion after the EU, and this role equally entails opportunities and responsibilities.
