You and your fellow classmates are on the beautiful Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. You try to cross a stream but lose your footing. You are swept down stream along with your gear. When you make it shore, you are unhurt but far from trail . Luckily, your gear also washed up. Collect your gear by exploring the 5 Themes of Geography and answering questions. Theme #1: Location

Where are we?

We can think about location in two ways.

Absolute location: a location can be described specifically by using coordinates on a map. You describe an absolute location using lines of longitude and latitude. Ex. 42o N and 36o W

Relative location: a location can be described in relation to another place. You can use directional words such as cardinal directions. You can also identify landmarks or the distances between places to describe relative location. Ex. Harrisburg is west of Philadelphia.

What is it like there, what kind of place is it?

We can think about place in two ways.

Think about things related to being a human! Examples-Population, jobs, buildings, housing, languages, customs, beliefs, clothing, transportation, and more!

Region describes an area that has one or more common characteristics.
