Si praticava la tecnica della scrittura collettiva; si leggevano i quotidiani, si discutevano e si scriveva insieme il commento. Erano previste conferenze e incontri settimanali con sindacalisti, politici, intellettuali. I primi a porre domande agli intervenuti dovevano essere coloro che avevano il titolo di studio più basso. L’obiettivo di questo progetto educativo era l’emancipazione delle classi subalterne, un insegnamento volto a compensare quelle differenze di classe che nella scuola pubblica

Le opere e il pensiero di Don Milani • Esperienze pastorali (1958): raccolta di riflessioni sul senso e sulle funzioni della Chiesa nella società e sul ruolo dell'istruzione. • L'obbedienza non è più una virtù (1965), in difesa dell'obiezione della coscienza. • Lettera a una professoressa (1967), testo scritto con i ragazzi di Barbiana, è una dura condanna del sistema scolastico italiano, giudicato antidemocratico e classista. Propone una riforma della scuola che sappia incidere sulla società guidando e sostenendo quegli studenti che provengono da contesti di povertà e disagio.
