In 1805, Madame Clicquot was only 27 when she became a widow and decided to take the reins of the House of Clicquot. Madame Clicquot became one of the first businesswomen in France and proved to be a very savvy businesswoman. Her motto for her House was “only one quality, the finest”.

“Our black grapes give the finest white wines.” - Madame Clicquot, 1825 This champagne is the showcase of the house's excellence. It is a perfect expression of her love for pinot noir which, since the 2008 vintage, represents about 90% of the blend.

"VCP": What does the "P" stand for? Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. Madam Clicquot's maiden name was "Ponsardin".
Before 1798, bottles had no distinguishing marks, and of course no label. Philippe Clicquot, the founder, chose the anchor as a token of hope and prosperity to be branded on his corks and eventually on the La Grande Dame bottle.
