This orientation course is designed specifically for counselors new to Mesa Public Schools. The course is broken up into two major sections. The first section, "Initial Orientation." This will be completed during the time you will spend at initial orientation. 

The next two section outlines your ASCA National Model coaching, which will happen once a month throughout the school year.

Overview

Learning Targets
  • Effective school counseling practices are necessary to be able to support students in academics, social-emotional learning, and post-secondary planning.
  • Effective school counselors need a comprehensive understanding of the MPS technology and information systems involved with the role of a school counselor.
  • School counselors have well-defined roles within the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) National Model for School Counseling.
  • Coaching for new counselors will help to increase the probability of success for our school counselors new to Mesa.

Success Criteria

  • Employ effective school counseling practices to support students in academics, social-emotional learning, and post-secondary planning.
  • Effectively access and navigate key MPS technology and information systems used by school counselors in Mesa.
  • Understand and implement expected behaviors and mindsets for school counselors within the ASCA National Model for School Counseling.
  • Engage in pre-planned and spontaneous coaching sessions with New Counselor Coaches to increase success in the role of a school counselor.
