Film

A biopic about José Hernandez and his path from a farm worker to becoming an engineer and an astronaut. A tale of perseverance, community and sacrifice to accomplish a seemingly impossible dream. Director: Alejandra Márquez Abella Writers: Bettina Gilois, Hernán Jiménez, Alejandra Márquez Abella Stars: Michael Peña, Rosa Salazar, Julio Cesar Cedillo

Since its release 20 years ago, Diego Torres’ song “Color Esperanza (“Color Hope)” has given listeners a sense of unity, peace, and, of course, hope. It has been an anthem of change among the Latin Iberia and US Hispanic market. On 18 May the team released a new version of “Color Esperanza” and a new video to appear on Sony Music Latin’s YouTube Channel. Both feature popular blockbuster talent to grasp the attention of a new generation.

All record label net proceeds from the song will benefit the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and its COVID-19 relief efforts throughout the Americas.

Geography

National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins each year on Sept. 15, celebrates U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history. Started in 1968 by Congress as Hispanic Heritage Week, it was expanded to a month in 1988. The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in several Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate theirs on Sept. 15, followed by Mexico on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept 21. Here are some key facts about the nation’s Latino population by geography, and by characteristics like language use and origin group.

Katya Celeste Echazarreta González is a Mexican electrical engineer, science communicator, and Citizen Astronaut. She worked at NASA, first as an intern during her university undergraduate career, then later as a test lead for the Europa Clipper Ground Support Equipment group. Find out more here!
