The fossa is the largest carnivorous mammal on Madagascar and survives by eating other animals. The fossa has an extra-long tail which helps it balance and jump from branch to branch. It also has retractable claws and flexible ankle joints to help it climb down a tree headfirst! Although it spends a lot of time in the trees, the fossa is just as comfortable running on the ground
The female fossa gives birth to two to four cubs. The cubs are raised by the mother alone and are weaned at about four months.
The fossa is solitary except during the breeding season.

Though Madagascar has multiple different biomes, fossas typically live in the rainforest biome. The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long. It is known for its dense canopies of vegetation. 2 common plants in the Madagascar rainforests are the Madagascar Banana tree and the Za Baobab. 2 common animals in the Madagascar rainforests are the ring tail lemurs and the aye aye.
