Colonisation
What does this image make you think?
- The British came to India in the 17th century as traders and merchants
- Slowly, they started influencing local politics, pitting one local king against another
- In 1757, the British East India Company won control of the Bengal region, gaining access to its vast resources.
As you might remember...
The start...
In 1857, Indian soldiers under the command of the British East India Company rebelled. Lasting 18 months, the War saw soldiers in many locations rebelling, but lacked a centralising force. When the War ended, the British Crown assumed control of India from the Company.
