Screwed pipework
Start
Task 1
- 3/4" Carbon Steel pipe
- 3/4" Elbows (x2)
- Stilsons
- PTFE Tape
- Pipe Threading machine
- Cutting compound
- Hacksaw
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
Components
Fabricate screwed pipwwork using 3 pieces of pipe, 2 elbows with both a horizontal and vertical 90-degree bend. each length of pipe should measure 350mm from edge to centre (Open end of pipe to centre of fitting) and centre to centre (Fitting to fitting) Similar to in the picture
Instructions
Make a reference point by placing the horizontal pipe in a vice making sure that its level and that way you can ensure the vertical one is also level.
Helpful Hints
Remember to allow for the elbows because you will be measuring to the centre and will need to allow for thread engagement.
Pipe prepping
Start
Task 2
- Angle grinder
- 2-4" Pipe (Whatever you can Find)
- Set Square
- File
- Grinding disc
Components
Continue to practice pipe prepping using an angle grinder and a grinding disc. Make sure you remove the paint/rust from the pipe just below the prep.
Instructions
Put the pipe low enough for you to comfortably work on it.
Helpful Hints
Take your time and move the pipe around in the vice so that you are not over stretching
Socket fittings
Start
Task 3
- 1" Carbon steel pipe
- 2 x 1" Socket Fittings
- Hacksaw
- Tape measure
- File
Components
Using 1" pipe create a spool like in the picture. The measurements will be 450mm centre to centre on each run. This will be welded once we have either access to our welding machine or if we can get one of the welders to tack it in place for us.
Instructions
Measure to the centre of the fitting, then measure inside the fitting to where the pipe will meet then fitting and allow an extra 2-3mm for expansion.
Helpful Hints
Remember to allow for the elbows and a slight gap for expansion.
Chamfer gauge

Task 4
- Aluminium plate
- Hacksaw
- Template
- File
Components
Continue with the chamfer gauge as per instructions given.
