Personal Experience
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand our own emotions (selfawareness) and the emotions of others (social awareness) and then to use this ability to guide our behavior (self‐management) and manage our relationships (relationship management) (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p.28).

Bridging Generations
- Generational Differences: Mentoring across generations requires understanding the context and experiences unique to each generation, whether Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, or Gen Z (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p. 72).
- Adapting Communication: Tailor your approach based on generational preferences for communication and learning, such as face-to-face versus virtual interaction.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Mentors must approach cross-generational relationships with an open mind and an awareness of their mentee’s unique worldview (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p. 73).
Cultivating Strong, Lasting Mentoring Connections
- Honesty: Trust is built on honesty and transparency between mentor and mentee.
- Openness: Create an open and safe space for the mentee to express their thoughts and concerns without judgment (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p. 111).
- Empowerment: Help mentees feel empowered by involving them in the decision-making process and supporting their independence in the relationship (Zachary & Fain, 2022, p. 111).
- Mutual Respect: Respect is key in ensuring both parties feel valued and heard in the mentoring process.
As a mentee, I had the privilege of learning from a mentor who guided me through both personal and professional challenges. They helped me set clear goals, provided constructive feedback, and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. Their patience and insight allowed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated, and I learned the value of having a trusted advisor to turn to. Now, I want to become a good mentor myself by offering the same support and guidance to others. I aim to create a safe, encouraging environment where my mentees can openly discuss their challenges and ambitions. By being an active listener, providing personalized feedback, and leading by example, I hope to help others grow and reach their full potential, just as my mentor did for me.
