Skimming is one way to look for the main ideas in a reading. When we skim we read over parts of the text very quickly. We don't need to read every word, or look up words we don't understands we hust need to get a general idea of what something is about.
f. Skimming for the main idea
When we know what the topic of a reading is, we can use our "internal" knowledge ( what we already know about the topic) to predict the kinds of words, or the kind of information we will read. Using this skill can help us to better understand what we will read about.
e. Predicting
Every pragraph has a main idea, or topic, which gives us the most important information in that paragraph. Often the main idea is mentioned in the first or seconf sentence of the paragraph.
d. Identifying main ideas within paragraph
Improve your reading fluency by not stopping at every word you don't know. Focus on understanding the "gist" or general idea of what you are reading. Reading fluently can help you increase your comprehension. Focus on what you can comprehend, not on what you can't.Time yourself as you read through a passage. Record your time in a notebook.
c. Developing reading fluency
When we need to read something to find certain information, we move our eyes very quickly across the text. When we "scan" like this, we do not read every word, or stop when we see a word we do not know, we read quickly, and stop only to find the information we are looking for.
b. Scanning
One way to quickly recognize what a reading passage is about is by first looking at the title and the subtitles. Doing this before you read can help you to understand what the main ideas of the reading will be.
a. Using title to understand main ideas.
