Watch this video to see a whole range of different types of assessment. While you watch this - ask yourself which of these methods would be considered: Assessment of Learning, Assessment for Learning, or Assessment as Learning (You can get the definitions of these by clicking into the other images on the slide)
Assessment as Learning helps to create learners who can reflect and decide for themselves on their next learning steps. As this will require some practice the tutor will support the process to begin with. You will know when you are successful with this method when your learners can be heard asking: "What are the criteria for improving my work?"
Assessment of Learning - These types of assessments are usually administered at the end of a unit and evaluate a learner's understanding by comparing their grades/marks/achievement against a class or national benchmarks/standards. We sometimes refer to this type of assessment as "Summative Assessment". Assessment for Learning (AfL) - These type of assessments generate feedback learners can use to improve their performance. As a tutor, this could be observing class discussions, asking questions and reviewing learner's work in progress. It is often immediate and informs changes you can make to your lessons straight away to make it more effective. We sometimes refer to this type of assessment as "Formative Assessment".

Assessment is a critical step in the process of effective learning, it helps tutors and learners to determine the extent to which learning objectives have been met. A Learning objective is what the learner's should know or be able to do by the time a lesson is completed. We need assessments to measure this and identify any learning gaps or misunderstandingings that may need to be re-taught.
