  • Bus topology has a passive topology. This means that computers on the bus only listen for data being sent.
  • Bus Topology is the simplest of network topologies. In this type of topology, all the nodes (computers as well as servers) are connected to the single cable (called bus), by the help of interface connectors. This central cable is the backbone of the network and is known as Bus (thus the name). Every workstation communicates with the other device through this Bus.

Definition

Types of Bus Topology

Distributed Bus

The type of network topology in which all of the nodes of the network are connected to a common transmission medium which has more than 2 end points that are creating by adding branches to a main section

Linear bus

The type of network topology in which all the nodes of the network connected to a common transmission medium which has exactly 2 endpoints.

Bus Cable/ Backbone

On a bus topology network, each node has its own address. When data is transferred it has a specific address, all nodes in the network will receive the data however only the node with the matching address will accept it. The rest will just ignore it

How does it work

  • The bus is simple, reliable in a very small network, and easy to use
  • Failure of one node does not affect the rest of the network
  • The bus requires the least amount of cable to connect the computers together
  • It is easy to implement and extend using connectors

Advantages of using Bus Topology

Disadvantages

03 & 04

If shared communication link fails, the entire network fails AND Fault isolation is complicated/difficult compared to RING Topology

02

As signal travels along the transmission channel, some of its energy is transferred into heat. Therefore, the strength of the signal becomes weaker as it travels further and further

01

Addition of new nodes requires a modification or replacement of the backbone

Appropriateness

Least expensive solution The network is small

VS

Limitations

Sending too many files over the communication channel can slow down the network
