Timeline

American Revolutionary War

Colonization

People from the British Empire, France, Spain, & other lands came to North America to find opportunity. Those that settled in the American Colonies belonged to the British Empire.

These settlers could also be called immigrants since they moved to new lands to live in.

American Revolutionary War

British Acts

After winning a very costly war against the French (French & Indian War), the British Empire began to pass many acts that impacted the American Colonies socially, politically, & economically. That means the colonists living there had to change their lives to fit the unfair laws of the British Empire even though they didn't get a say.

How would you like it if I told you I was going to put strangers in your house & you had to feed them?

What the American Colonists Did

The British Empire's acts & not getting a say in how they live their lives (representation) angered the American Colonists, causing many to rise up against the British Empire through different ways. Some boycotted British shops, created & worked in organizations against the British government, & others protested to show how angry the British Empire had made them & why. American colonists hoped these actions would get the British Empire to take back their acts & policies, but unfortunately that didn't happen.

One form of protest was the Boston Tea Party!

The Continental Congress

When the British Empire ignored the American Colonists call for change (letting the colonists representing themselves) & continued to harm colonists for working against the British Empire, the American Colonists got together & created the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress's job was to tell the British Empire once more what the American Colonists wanted changed & if the Empire didn't do that, the Continental Congress next job was to design a declaration of independence so that the American Colonists could establish their own country & break away from British rule. That way the American Colonists could form & live by their own laws.

The Continental Congress acted as the leaders representing the demands of the American Colonists.

American Revolutionary War

The Declaration of Independence & War

After the British Empire failed to work cooperatively with the Continental Congress, the Continental Congress decided the British Empire no longer cared about the wellbeing of the American Colonists. So, a declaration of independence was created & sent to the British king, letting him know that the American Colonists will now form their own country & work by their own rules. Not wanting to lose the land, people, & resources there, the British Empire declared war on the American Colonists & the American Revolutionary War began.

Do you think the Americans won the war?
