The Atom and Nucleus by Yuri El-Amin

What are atoms?

Atoms are the basic unit of a chemical element. It contains a nucleus with electrons that orbit around it. Each element is determined by the amount of protons.

It's no laughing MATTER

Parts of an atom

Nuclear Radiation

What is Nuclear radiation?

Alpha Radiation

Beta Radiation

Beta radiation occurs when a neutron is split into an electron and proton while a new element is formed. Beta radiation travels 2-3 meters but it can be stopped by a thin piece of glass or metal. While Beta radiation is able to pass through skin, and cause mutations or cell death, it can be used for medical treatments such as cancer and radiotherapy.

The nucleus is the center of the atom that consists of subatomic particles called protons and neutrons. It is positively charged. The number of neutrons defines what isotope of an element it is.

Neutrons are the plan one of the group, they have no charge and they weigh 1 amu. Their job is to keep the atom together. If neutrons are not present the "group" would break up like one direction in 2015

Protons are the happy one of the "group". They're like the leader, they form the nucleus. They are positively charged and weigh one amu (Atomic Mass Unit). They're like the leader, they form the nucleus

Electrons are the bad boy to Proton's good cop. Electrons make a negative charge that balances the positive charge of the protons in the nucleus. Electrons orbit around the nucleus and have the same number of electrons as protons.

Nuclear Radiation is when there are too many or not enough neutrons for protons are too low or too high for the atom to be stable. There are also three levels of Nuclear radiation, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma

Alpha is know as the helpful radiation. Alpha radiation occurs when a helium nucleus is released, and it will travel about 3-5 centimeters. .Alpha particles are fairly easy to stop, they can be stoped with a piece of paper or skin. However they can attack cells and cause mutations if inhaled or ingested, but it Alpha radiation used in lots of household items.

Gamma radiation is the fastest and deadliest type of radiation. Gamma radiation has the shortest waves that are pure energy and travel at the speed of light. However they can be stopped by 4.2 meters of water, 2 meters of concrete, or 0.4 meters of lead. If you make contact with gamma rays say your prayers.. Your skin will burn, your cells will mutate and die, and your bones will rot from the inside out Muhahahhah. but It can be useful for X-rays, detecting tumors, and killing food born illnesses. So thats cool I suppose.
