Appropriate Indications for Urinary Catheter Use

  • Acute urinary retention and bladder outlet obstruction
  • The need for accurate measurement of output in critically ill patients
  • Perioperative use in selected surgeries
  • Assist in healing of open sacral and perineal wounds in the incontinent patient
  • In patients requiring immobilization (e.g., trauma with unstable spine)
  • For comfort for end of life care if needed

Duration of catheterization is the most important risk factor for development of urinary tract infection

The risk of urinary tract infection increases 7 percent each day that a patient has a urinary catheter in place.
