Definition and Origins

ORIGINS:In early 20th century, however, musicologists Erich von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs realized that the designation "string family" was too narrow a term. Also, new instruments were being invented that sometimes bridged the traditional instrument family linesTo address this problem, they devised a system of classification based upon the material that vibrates to produce the tone. We therefore have Chordophones, in which a string vibrates.

DEFINITION:Is any kind of class of musical instruments in which a stretched, vibrating string produces the initial sound. The four basic types are bowed strings, harps, lutes and lyres

Definition and origins

In the Middle Ages we find a large number of instruments, some of which come from Antiquity and other from the East, introduced as a result of the Crusades.

The violin family was created in the 16th century as an alternative to viola. Lutes, with a plucked string and half-pear shape were used as solo instruments

Developement (historical evolution)

They are born from the bow, invented during the Paleolithic period (9,000 BC). Its created for hunting purposes, and its also used for war and to create a particular sound.
