The British Empire established by the United Kingdom was for almost a century the world's leading economic, political, cultural and scientific power. It has often been described as the world's first hyperpower, mainly because of its hegemony and size.At its zenith, in the early decades of the 20th century, it had a population of 400-500 million (about a quarter of the human race) and spanned territories covering 36.6 million square kilometers (about a quarter of the world's land mass), establishing itself as the largest empire in history.

dominion vs colony

Establishment founded in a less developed country by a nation belonging to a dominant group; this country, placed under the dependence of the occupying country, which profits from it moreover the old colony not more of obligation towards England as for example all the colonies are not part of the commonwealth

Colony

VS

The difference is that the former dominion is now part of the Commonwealth, which emerged in the mid-twentieth century during the process of decolonization. It was formally constituted by the London Declaration of 1949, which made the member states "free and equal" partners. The symbol of this free association is King Charles III who is the head of the Commonwealth.
