Ancient olympia
Olympia is a small town in Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times and in the 10th century B.C., Olympia became a centre for the worship of Zeus.
It was a major Panhellenic religious sanctuary and today it is famous for the nearby archaeological site with the same name.
Archaeological Site of Olympia "Archeologikos Choros Olimpias"
This site held more than 70 archaeological buildings, and a lot of them are still there to this day. The site was re-discovered in 1766 by an English antiquarian Richard Chandler. Many excavations were carried at this site. People are especially interested in Pelopion, the tomb of the quasi-mythical king Pelops. It was a monument surrounded by a pentagonal structure.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF OLYMPIA "ARCHEOLOGIKOS CHOROS OLIMPIAS"
Many monuments have been lost, such as the Olympia Zeus, a gold-and-ivory cult statue. Other masterpieces have survived: large votive archaic bronzes, pedimental sculptures and metopes from the temple of Zeus, and the famous complex of Hermes by Praxiteles.
The ancient Olympic games
The ancient Olympic games were held at Olympia every four years. Ancient Greek gods were worshiped there, but mostly Zeus.At the site, there are remains of the palaestra of Olympia, where wrestlers and other athletes trained.
THE ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES
The exedra was reserved for the judges at Olympia on the south embankment of the stadium. Today, this is where the Olympic flame is passed on to the first torchbearer of the upcoming Olympic Games. As the Olympic Games were held in honour of Zeus, the Greeks gave them a mythological origin.
