Harry Harrison

" In 1950, the United States - with just 9.5% of the world's population - consumed 50% of the world's raw materials. This percentage is still rising, and within 15 years, at the current rate of growth, it will consume more than 83% per year. By the end of the century, if our population were to continue to grow at the same rate, this country would need more than 100% of the world's resources to maintain our present standard of living."

for what purpose is dystopia used in literary and artistic works ?

Dystopia is a sub-genre of Science Fiction that appeared in the middle of the 20th century, George Orwell is one of the greatest actors of this sub-genre. To illustrate the theme of dystopia, we will start with the book "Animal Farm", published in 1945, written by the same author. This dystopian book is a satyre of the 20th century society which makes us imagine a utopia of an animal kingdom where all would be equal. However, in the course of the book we will see the thirst for power take over the famous dream life to which all animals aspire. Next we will study a passage from Harry Harrison's book "Soylent Green", published in 1966 in the United States. This work takes us to a dystopian future, described as chaotic by the author. Indeed, famine, disease, poverty, punctuate the life of 35 million New Yorkers in these future years. Thirdly, we will discuss the film "Divergent", directed by Neil Burger and released in 2014. This film plunges us into a dystopian parallel world, where a faction system rules over the population, each one playing a different but important role. As in the previous document, we are in the future, a future that looks utopian at first glance, however, as in animal farm, the thirst for power will take over until it leads to a factional war. Finally, the last document is an oil on canvas by Michael Kerbow, however I do not have the date of creation. This work takes us once again into the future. On this one we can see far too many cars piled up on the roads. The only plausible cause of this is surely the overpopulation that has taken over the planet Earth. As a reminder, a dystopia is a story that takes place in an imaginary society that is difficult or impossible to live in, full of flaws, and whose model must not be imitated.

Introduction

The nightmare is illustrated in different ways in the documents. Firstly that of the dictatorship, where each person does not have the same value. There is also the nightmare landscape illustrated in document 4 where we see human stupidity crammed into narrow roads, the nightmare of overpopulation, also described in document 2

- A nightmarish future

The thirst for power plays an important role in the dystopia described by our works. First of all, in document 1, we see the rise of the pigs' desire for dictatorship. Indeed, this story shows us that despite the desire for a wonderful society where all animals are equal, the thirst for power prevails. The most concrete example is the quote on the cover of the book “all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others”

- A future punctuated by a thirst for power

The common point that we have noted in each of the documents is the fact that they all take place more or less in the future. These dystopian futures seek to make the spectators, readers, aware of catastrophes that could occur, according to them, if our society does not evolve in its way of seeing the world, of living. In the different works we notice that society, the world has been destroyed by individualities, by thoughtless acts.

- A future destroyed by thoughtless acts

I - A dystopian future

We can see that in our documents, the political systems are disastrous. In Animal Farm, the communist system is established, however, the equal rights of the animals gradually deteriorate until the dictatorship of the pigs over the rest of the farm. Then, still using more or less the same principles, we have the political system of the film Divergent. Based on a faction system, each person has a precise role known to all. These are strict laws that supposedly allow this society to survive, indeed, no open-mindedness is tolerated as it is considered too dangerous. By dint of this, one faction will want to take over by transforming the others into robots thanks to electronic chips. From that moment on, free will is still suppressed and we are still in a dictatorship.

- criticism of political systems

Society is heavily criticised in the various documents presented. Firstly, in Animal Farm, it is the communist society that is very harshly caricatured. Then, there is the society of overconsumption of our days which is the object of heavy criticisms led by hypotheses on our near future if nothing is changed in our actions. Finally, there is the society of Divergent, where blood ties take second place to the "happiness" of the society, the free will of the individual is suppressed while letting him believe that he has a share of freedom, which will cause the loss of a society built on too unstable a foundation.

- criticism of society

II - dystopia to criticise

Finally, we can say that dystopia is used in literature and artistic works in order to make the reader reflect on his actions. It is also used to provide more or less plausible hypotheses about a society that could appear in our world if resilient systems are not put in place. Indeed, dystopia only finds its place in unstable environments where fundamental rights are not respected. The aim of authors who use this dystopia is therefore to point out particular political systems, totalitarian societies, to rise awareness against strong and often unhealthy ideologies. Generally, those who use dystopia take a certain social problem and extrapolate it, according to their imagination and interests, to make it a common interest.
