Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration Vocabulary
Start
speed
Definition: the distance something travels in a given amount of time
Synonyms: race, hurry, run, rate, etc.
Example Sentence: The car was traveling at a speed of 40 miles/hr.
Velocity
Definition: the speed AND direction of a moving object
Synonyms: momentum, pace, quickness etc.
Example Sentence: The motorcycle was traveling at a velocity of 60 miles/hr east.
Vector
Definition: a quantity that has both size and direction
Synonyms: aim, angle, direction etc.
Example Sentence: Velocity and acceleration are both vector quantities.
Slope
Definition: the steepness of a line on a graph
Synonyms: slant, incline, rise etc.
Example Sentence: The slope of a direction vs. time graph is the velocity of the car.
Acceleration
Definition: the rate at which velocity changes
Synonyms: slant, incline, rise etc.
Example Sentence: The bus has good acceleration because it can reach 60m/hr in 5.7 seconds.
