A non-stop century!

In october 1807, Napoleón (emperor of France) wants to invade Portugal. He needs his troops to march across Spain. Napoleón and Manuel Godoy (Spanish valido of the king, Carlos IV) meet in Fontainebleau, France. They agree to divide Portugal in three parts, one of them for Godoy and his family. But Napoleón changes his mind and when the French troops are in Spain he gives them the order to take the Spanish cities and stay. The French invasion has started. Read more

Battle of Bailén The French army was defeated in open field for the first time since 1801. It was not the end of the war but it was devastating for France. In the end, they had to retire from Spain. This is a 'meme' published in England at the time. British humour! 🙊

MAIN PRINCIPLES OF THE SPANISH 1812 CONSTITUTION:

  • Feudal system was abolished
  • Citizens' rights and freedoms were recognized
    • libertad de prensa, de asociación, de expresión,...
    • derecho a la educación,...
  • Suffrage:
    • limited to men over 25 years old that are land owners.

  • Ominous decade (década ominosa): 1823-1833
    • Absolutists are in power again.
    • Some think they should be more flexible.

  • Liberal triennium (trienio liberal): 1820-1823
    • Continuous conflicts between absolutists and liberals.
    • 1823: A French army, “Los 100.000 hijos de San Luis” comes to Spain through the Pyrenees, to support Fernando VII.
    • Absolutist monarchy is restored.
