It’s at the top of the food chain. It’s responsible for financing the film. In the independent circuit are the ones in charge of finding financing through investors. They are the ones who put the money into the film. For them it’s a business deal. It’s an investment they want to see a return on.
Executive producer
The producer is the person who runs the show. They make the whole film to happen from pre-production to post and distribution. The producer’s job in pre-production is to hire key members of the crew. The producer’s job in the production is to oversee that everything is getting done on time and on budget. In post-production they make sure everything is done in a relatively quick fashion. When the academy awards give the prize for best picture, the producer always accepts it. It is considered their film.
Producer
Screenwriter: It’s the one who writes the script. The screen writer creates the characters, dialogues and the story line. No movie can start without some form of a script.
Screenwriter
The director’s job is to bring the page (of the script) to the screen. It is their artistic vision. They are in charge of certain crew members to make this happen. The director has two important jobs: 1) They decide camera composition, lenses and movement 2) work with the actors.
Director / filmmaker
It’s in charge of scheduling the film. They are also responsible for keeping order on the set. They work in between the producer and the director to get the job done on time.
First Assistant Director or 1st AD
It helps the 1st AD. They usually deal with extras. They make call sheets for the next day and they are usually the liaison between the production office and the set.
Second Assistant Director or 2nd AD
It is responsible for bringing the actors to the director. They videotape the auditions and filter the best for callbacks.
Casting Director
It’s almost like a second director of the movie. They maintain the continuity through detailed notes. They make sure that if an actor is holding a prop at the end of one shot, they have the prop in the same way in the next shot. They also feed the lines to the talents if the talent doesn’t remember his/her lines.
Script Supervisor
They provide a film with its unique visual identity, or look. They create the desired look using lighting, framing, camera movement, etc. D.Ps collaborate closely with the camera crew. On smaller films, D.Ps often also operate the camera during the shoot.
Director of Photography or D.P.:
They operate the camera. They oversee the preparation of camera equipment. Also, they are responsible for the camera crew.
Camera Operator:
Its main job is to maintain the camera, build the camera, and pull focus.
First Assistant Camera or 1st AC
They report to the director of photography. They are the head of the lighting department. They set up the lights for the D.P.
Gaffer
A still photographer is a person who creates film stills, still photographic images specifically intended to be used in the marketing and publicity of feature films and the motion picture industry in network television productions.
Still Photographer
Its job is to get the best production sound possible. They record the production dialogues and fx. They also determine which microphones will be used for every scene. The also operate the sound recorder and keep the sound report.
Sound Mixer
They help the sound mixer and operate the boom microphones. Boom operators are responsible for positioning microphones so that sound mixers can capture the best quality and sound possible.
Boom Operator
It is a person who re-creates sounds for film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. They replace sounds that cannot properly be recorded on set.
Foley Artist
They are the head of the art department. They help directors to define and achieve the look and feel of a film. They must calculate the budgets and decide how the effort and the money will be spent.
Production Designer
It is the Art Director's job to realize the Production Designer's creative vision for all the sets and locations that eventually give productions their unique visual identity.
Art Director
They meet with the Production Designer to discuss the agreed look of the film. Then they visit prop houses to choose the bigger props and book them for the shoot. Just before the shoot, Set Decorators photograph all items, take careful measurements and allocate the right props to each set.
Set Decorator
It is a person who designs costumes for a film, stage production or television show. The role of the costume designer is to create the characters' outfits/costumes and balance the scenes with texture and colour, etc.
Costume designer
Its responsibilities include designing each character's look, applying makeup products on actors' faces and bodies and using prosthetics to create special makeup effects.
