QUEEN ELIZABETH II Elizabeth Alexandra Mary or Elizabeth II was queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1952 until 2022. She was the longest reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom, serving 70 years and 214 days. She was born on April 21, 1926, in London, England to Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She was born into the royal family known as the House of Windsor and was the eldest child of George VI. When King George V died, his eldest son Edward VIII became king. Edward abdicated (gave up) the throne and George V's second son, George VI, became the next king. During this time, if he had a son, he would have been next in line for the throne, however, George VI only had two daughters. This meant that Elizabeth became next in line for the throne. Immediately, Elizabeth began training for her future duties as queen, began to undertake public duties, as well as privately studying music, history, and language at home. In 1947, Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, former prince of Greece and Denmark. Before the wedding, he was named Duke of Edinburgh. They had four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. In February of 1952, while on tour in Kenya, Africa, her father King George VI died. Elizabeth became "Queen Elizabeth Il" at the age of 25. Her coronation (crowning ceremony) took place at the Westminster Abbey on June 2,1953 and was viewed on television by 20 million people. The monarch (a government with a king or queen) was a constitutional monarchy or a limited monarchy. The king or queen was head of state, meaning he or she represented the Commonwealth, but did not have power over it. As queen, Elizabeth did not control the British government. Instead, the monarch mostly performed ceremonial duties and made appearances at public events in Britain and around the world. The prime minister serves as the head of government and works with Parliament (British government) and the queen. During Queen Elizabeth's reign, she worked with more than 14 prime ministers in the United Kingdom, with the first being Winston Churchill. When Elizabeth first came to the throne, she became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries. The Commonwealth is a group of sovereign states that give up some of their power to a central government (the queen). Throughout her reign, the number of realms or regions changed. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime. Some gained independence or became republics over time. By the end of her reign, she was queen of 15 sovereign states including Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, and the UK. A jubilee is an important event for the king or queen that marks the length of their reign. Queen Elizabeth Il reached her Golden Jubilee in 2002, marking her reign of 50 years. Only two monarchs before her reached this jubilee: King George III and Queen Victoria (her great-great-grandma). When a jubilee (milestone) is passed, it is celebrated with a party and fireworks. In 2012, she reached her Diamond Jubilee marking 60 years on the throne. This event was also celebrated with festivities across the Commonwealth including a parade of boats on the Thames River and a concert at Buckingham Palace. In September 2015, Queen Elizabeth became the longest reigning monarch in history, passing Queen Victoria's reign of 63 years, seven months and one day. In 2021, her husband Prince Phillip died at the age of 99. In 2022, Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years on the throne. Her support for the monarchy in the United Kingdom, as well as popularity, remained consistently high throughout her reign. She passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. People from all over the country came to honor the queen waiting hours in line to pay their respects. Her son Prince Charles succeeded her (next in line) and became King Charles III.
