ENGLISH PRESENTATION A.S 2023/24 RIME MANAR-GINEVRA COLOMBO
Lessons of the past
Between 1640 and 1807, Britain transported 3.1 million Africans to its American colonies in the triangular slave trade, exchanging goods for slaves in Africa to work on American plantations. Harsh conditions led to many deaths during the journey.
British merchants in ports like Bristol, Liverpool, and London amassed immense wealth from the slave trade, leaving lasting reminders in street names, statues, and buildings. Profits from slavery influenced society, funding institutions and political careers for slave-trading families.
Britain is confronting its colonial past by removing reminders of the slave trade, such as the statue of Robert Milligan removed in 2020 . Slavery was abolished across most of the British Empire in 1833, with the government compensating slave owners with £20 million (equivalent to £2.4 billion today) rather than the enslaved individuals.
Figures like George Hibbert and Robert Milligan advocated for slavery's preservation, while Edward Colston, a prominent slave trader, later became a philanthropist in Bristol, leaving his mark through charitable donations and named landmarks

The history of America
By 1733, 13 colonies existed in North America, where lumbering, fishing, and fur trapping were main activities. Economic growth in the 19th century demanded more manpower.
In 1620, the Mayflower carried 131 Puritans to Plymouth, escaping religious discrimination from England, founding the first British colony. Severe labor shortages led to slavery and British policy neglect in Colonial America.

INDEX
Despite the abolition of slavery in many countries, approximately 40 million people are currently victims of modern slavery. Shockingly, in nearly half of the world's nations, individuals can't be prosecuted for enslaving others. This highlights the ongoing relevance of historical lessons yet to be fully understood.
Lessons of the past
The 1850s saw a growing division between free and slave states. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, seven southern states seceded from the Union, prompting Lincoln to call for troops to recapture forts. Ultimately, eleven southern states left the Union, and the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, lasting until 1865, marking the darkest period in American history
The American Revolution erupted in 1775, leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the 13 original colonies in 1776. The Treaty of Versailles recognized the independence of the United States in 1783, and George Washington became the first president in 1789.

Black Lives Matter (BLM)
Modern slavery is everywhere, sometimes hidden, where people are forced to work making clothes, serving food, or cooking in houses. Those trapped might experience violence or threats. Many end up in this situation while trying to escape poverty or help their families.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) emerged in 2013 to address violence and systemic discrimination against people of color, particularly after Trayvon Martin's killing. BLM has led protests against police brutality and for social justice, gaining global visibility. It gained significant momentum in 2020 after George Floyd's death, prompting widespread protests in the USA and worldwide against police brutality and systemic racism.
