This is a famous painting by Jacques-Louis David, completed in 1793. It depicts the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, an important figure of the French Revolution. Marat, a journalist and politician, was murdered by Charlotte Corday, who had entered his apartment under the excuse of giving him information. In the painting, Marat is depicted collapsed in his bathroom, because he had been stabbed to death by Corday. David depicts Marat as a martyr, with a calm expression, holding a letter from Corday.
