The Language of Landforms
The SAMR model is a framework that is categorized into four tiers of online learning and was created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura. The four tiers are substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition.
The SAMR Model
Redefinition is using technology to completely change the lesson plan and creates new tasks that are inconceivable to do in a classroom.
Modification is using technology as an actual change to the lesson and its learning outcome.
Augmentation is also when technology is used a direct substitute for a traditional teaching method but there is a functional improvement.
Substitution is using technology as a direct substitute for a traditional teaching method but there is no functional change to the learning content.

This lesson plan is directed towards fourth graders and the subject falls within social studies. Students will use symbols and gestures to explore the characteristics of various landforms in the United States. Students will be able to identify and describe various landforms. Throughout the lesson students will work on their own, with a partner, and in a group.
The Lesson Plan
- I would modify the lesson to include technology by using google docs to list the landforms and instead of a worksheet I would upload it as PDF for the students can review online as needed.
- In original lesson plan the students partner up and list as many landforms as they can and they are written on the board. A worksheet is also handed out for independent work and the answers are reviewed after.
Substitution
- When listing the different types of landforms students who have a harder time organizing or constructing their thoughts can use a graphic organizer
- This will help students focus their thoughts for writing as well as help see the connections between each landforms
- Graphic organizers are beneficial for students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Low-Tech
- Instead of this the students will create a presentation on google slides to share the symbol and the gesture they created for the landform they were assigned.
- In the original lesson the students group up and create a symbol and gesture for the assigned landform using the hardcopy worksheet.
Augmentation
- Since all the groups will be going up one at a time to present it can be difficult for students with disabilities to stay focused
- Adapted seating such as cushions seats can help students with ADHD not get over stimulated.
Mid-Tech
- Continuing with the last slide the presentation must be post it on google classroom for others to comment on the presentation as well as any improvements students would like to add.
Modification
- Lastly in the lesson the students will individually complete the Landform Story worksheet.
- Instead students will create their own landform story and record it. The video will then be uploaded onto google classroom where students will interact in the comments in order to create better engagement.
Redefinition
- Since students will upload their videos it can be hard for some students to process the audio to the goal
- Closed captioning can help reinforce the spoken language to text as well as help them focus on the videos
- This is beneficial for students who are hard of hearing, dyslexic, or have ADHD
