Let's break it down
Learning in this setting is unintentional, which is called legitimate peripheral participation. The learner moves from the perimeter of the community to the center as they gains expertise. They are able to engage and participate actively in the sociocultural practices of the community
How can STL be used Educational Technoloy?
- Group discussion posts
- Case Studies
- Peer Teaching
- White boards
- Jigsaw activities
How is this the SLT?
In the cooking labs, students work with their group members to complete differnt dishes. Students will learn from each other and Chef to prep all plate components, manage time, style food, and participate in a professional kitchen.
- Students will start with basic knowledge and work together with chef to aquire the expertise skill of cooking!
Who Developed this theory?
*Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger*
- Developed in the early 1990's
- Claim that students are more inclined to learn by actively participating in the learning experience
The basics
The Situated Learning theory is described as learning being developed when individuals have the opportunity to participate in a community setting
- Learning takes place through the relationships between people and connecting prior knowledge with authentic, informal, and often unintended contextual learning
Course Activities through LMS
- Discussion posts
- Peer learning presentations
- Peer Project editing
- Group Menu Design Project
- Menu matching game
- Breakout sessions
