1904 - White residents attempt to relocate Black population
The Chicago Tribune article from January 22, 1904 reads, “As a solution to the problem suddenly presented, Evanston citizens are reviving the old scheme of a town for negroes, to be located near Niles Center. To this it is proposed to deport objectionable characters.
Employement Disrimination
Black residents were limited in the types of employment they would be hired for in Evanston and largely worked domestic jobs. Discrimination persisted in the employment field, as demonstrated in the 1922 Evanston News Index ads page, where the majority of job postings specify that the employee had to be white.Photo courtesy of IL Secretary of State archives
1853- Illinois Black Law
An act passed by the State Legislature that made it a misdemeanor for an African American to move to Illinois, the 1853 Illinois Black Law was considered "the harshest of all discriminatory Black Laws passed by Northern states before the Civil War." 13 years later, in 1866, Illinois bars racial segregation, successfully repealing the 1853 Illinois Black Law.
