I/ What's Zelda : Breath Of The Wild ?
Zelda : Breath Of The Wild is an open-world RPG action game developped by Nintendo and released on 3rd of March, 2017.
Hidemaro Fujibayashi
The game is set within a fantasy world inspired from Medieval Europe. The map of Hyrule is about 360km² which is about 50 footballfields. It takes around 30 minutes to cross it from the northernmost point to the southernmost point
II/ An ancient utopia :
The Kingdom Of Hyrule was at its golden age 10 000 years ago, an utopia was born at this time, maintaining peace beneath the kingdom. The embodiment of despair, Calamity Ganon, tries every 10 000 years to tear apart Hyrule and fall it over in a sort of dystopia. Link ( our character ) and Zelda ( the princess ) failed to protect Hyrule from Ganon a hundred years ago.
There are countless abandoned and ruined buildings around the map as well as broken things left behind. This shows that the kingdom was full of life before but that something happened.
Temple Of Time
Broken Guardian
III/ A slowly approaching dystopia :
When you first start the game, you will instantly ask yourself : where are the people ? You are in fact alone during all of the tutorial, even if there's this guy ---- > The fact of being completely alone during the first part of the game adds something to it which will make you feel surprised when you first see a person.
Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule
This is the result of your fight with Ganon a hundred years ago, almost everything was destroyed and only a few villages remain across Hyrule. If they werent destroyed, this is because Zelda is still fighting Ganon in the castle, waiting for you to come, because yes, you died.
Hyrule Castle
To sum it all up, Ganon's goal is to destroy Hyrule, but he failed against Zelda, however he did not completely dissapeared and so, the Hyrule kingdom became a dystopia. His presence makes monsters appear in all of the kingdom, thus staying in a broken state.
Conclusion :
We can agree that Zelda : Breath Of The Wild actually is a dystopian world which is showing us the impact of the chaos caused by the Calamity. A world which once was a beautiful utopia, has now become a dystopia. This is the classic plot of the dystopian genre. We can easily make a parallel with the Dark Soul type game : Elden Ring as this world is also slowly falling into a great dystopia.
