La società romana era divisa in 2 CLASSI SOCIALI:

LA SOCIETA' ROMANA

L’esercito romano fu uno dei più potenti dell’antichità, il suo punto di forza era la DISCIPLINA. Era organizzato in LEGIONI, grosse unità autosufficienti formate da circa seimila uomini. I soldati erano ben addestrati, disciplinati e provvisti di armi e macchine da guerra. Erano professionisti, che normalmente restavano in servizio per un periodo di vent’anni. I soldati, oltre a venire impiegati nelle campagne di CONQUISTA di nuovi territori, dovevano SORVEGLIARE i confini delle guerre già appartenenti a Roma, garantendo ai cittadini un’esistenza pacifica e sicura.

L'ESERCITO ROMANO

I soldati NON RICEVEVANO una paga, ma potevano tenersi una parte del bottini: oro, argento, denaro, terre e uomini come schiavi. Alla base dell’esercito vi era la legione, simile ad un reggimento, formata dai soldati semplici detti appunto LEGIONARI. La forza dell’esercito era la FANTERIA, divisa in coorti e centurie. La CAVALLERIA, schierata ai fianchi delle legioni, era formata da squadroni di 30 uomini. La legione era comandata da un TRIBUNO al quale rispondevano direttamente i CENTURIONI: ufficiali al comando dei piccoli gruppi da combattimento, circa 60 uomini, che componevano la legione. I centurioni avevano la responsabilità di dirigere gli uomini nella confusione della battaglia, mentre il tribuno controllava l’andamento generale.

Tra le diverse formazioni di combattimento dei legionari, la più famosa è la TESTUGGINE: una vera e propria scatola formata dagli scudi che proteggevano il gruppo di legionari di fronte, sui fianchi e sopra la testa. Potevano così avanzare in sicurezza anche se bersagliati dagli arcieri nemici.

I patrizi erano PROPRIETARI TERRIERI.Era il gruppo sociale che deteneva il POTERE POLITICO e solo loro potevano fa parte del SENATO e comandare l'ESERCITO. Appartenevano ad antiche famiglie nobili e si consideravano i discedenti dei fondatori della città. Il loro nome, infatti deriva da PATRES, cioè PADRI.

GLI SCHIAVI

Gli schiavi erano PRIGIONIERI DI GUERRA o PLEBEI che non erano riuscitit a pagare I DEBITI. Erano persone che NON POSSEDEVANO alcun diritto e venivano impiegati soprattutto nel lavoro dei campi o nei lavori all'interno della famiglia. Il pater familias aveva su di loro potere di vita e di morte; poteva anche donargli LA LIBERTA', facendoli diventare dei LIBERTI. I LIBERTI godevano della cittadinanza romana.

I PLEBEI

I plebei erano LAVORATORI, contadini, artigiani, commercianti e pastori che pagavano le TASSE. Costituivano la MAGGIORANZA DELLA POPOLAZIONE. Infatti il termine PLEBEI, deriva da PLEBS, cioè MOLTITUDINE. Molti erano POVERI, ma fra loro non mancavano i benestanti. I plebei NON POTEVANO PARTECIPARE alla vita politica della città e quando Roma era in pericolo, dovevano lasciare la propria occupazione per COMBATTERE NELL'ESERCITO.

I CLIENTI

I clienti erano PLEBEI o STRANIERI che non appartenevano a nessuna gens. Erano persone LIBERE (non erano schiavi) che si erano messe al servizio di potenti patrizi in cambio di PROTEZIONE. Ai patrizi assicuravano fedeltà e servizi di ordine economico e militare.
