STEP 1
WHO?
Quilombo tribes are spread all over the 26 States of the Federation and are more than 6.300 communities
Selection of the recipients
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:
A lifestyle in symbiosis with the nature, the matriarch society, the cultural legacy.
THE THREAT:
Environmental racism: what is it? it is a form of discrimination that leads to the eviction of the minorities from thir mother lands, obliging them to live in dangerous and polluted areas.
STEP 2
STUDY OF THEIR NEEDS
HEALTHCARE:
EMPLOYMENT
EDUCATION
INFRASTRUCTURES
This area has a large percentage of unemployment and the only source of livelihood is fishing .
This field is poorly strenghtened and usually stops after primary school.
There is an evident gap between the abandoned communiyy and the industrialized part.
Health conditions are put at risk by constant exposure to industrialization process.
«I am here and to get me to leave they will have to kill me… i will not abandon my own home.» - the Matriarch
Step three
Problems
Quilombo tribes face multiple problems and needs.
04
01
No proper education
Environmental racism
according the different data collected, most of the members of the community do not complete their cycle of studies, leading to a lack of proper education.
consists of the eviction of the Quilombolas from their countries, being then obliged to live in polluted areas.
05
02
Lack of infrastructure
No proper healthcare
the communities lack of infrastructure, seeming abandoned, and presenting different problems as the lack of a proper system of garbage collection.
different diseases are developing among the members of the community, in addition to the lack of structures dedicated to help them.
03
06
Racism
Lack of work
Quilombolas, as already mentioned, are descendant of African slaves, therefore they are dark skinned and suffer from racism by the Brazilian State itself.
because of the pollution, it is now harder living from only agricolture and fishing, which are the main occupations in the community, leading to an high tax of poverty.
Legal problem
Legally, Quilombolas are protected by the 1988 Federal Constitution, at the art.68 (ADCT), which gives them the right to collective property in their territories. It should also lead to access to social and fundamental rights as the right to healthcare and education.
Art. 68. "Aos remanescentes das comunidades dos quilombos que estejam ocupando suas terras é reconhecida a propriedade definitiva, devendo o Estado emitir-lhes os títulos respectivos."
Study of the Legal Issue
with the implementation of art.68 of the Constitution, and the help of the UN and the government of Brazil, we could reach the following SDG:
01
Help economically the community
02
Implement food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agricolture.
03
Ensure a system of healthcare for the well-being of the community
04
Provide education to the community
08
Providing for a productive employment and decent work for the community
09
Build resilient infrastructure
14
Protect the life below the water
15
Protect the terrestrial ecosystems
16
Provide access to justice
Step four
Some proposals...
foundraising event to celebrate the culture
(school) projects related to the land, agricolture and sustainable fishing
volunteers to educate
register and upload of traditional songs for fundraises
creation of site to bring awareness and gathering funds
water filters
Step 4(bis)
Reverse brainstorming
Creation of a website
Register songs
Water filters
With the help of associations that are in touch with the community, to record and upload traditional songs on the web to raise money to help Quilombolas.
By connecting with associations in contact with the community, we would be able to buy and distribute water filters to improve the healthcare conditions
Using our resources and knowledge of the internet to create a website about the Quilombolas. Spreading awareness and raising funds
We selected this project following different criteria:
Step 5: our criteria
As the final prototype we selected the creation of a website, to help bring awareness and raise money for the Quilombo community.
1. Plausibility
2. effectiveness
4. simplicity
3. accessibility
Step 6: Our prototype
We created QuilomboUnity as a prototype of a website to give assistance, even from far away to the people of the Quilombo community. The website includes: -presentation of the community - struggles the community has to face - our ideas to provide help and assistance to the Quilombo community.
