Prepositions of place and the verb to be (1)
The prepositions are short words that are generally used to indicate the location of an object, animal or person regarding another object, animal or person.
El gato está sobre la silla
The cat is on the chair
El perro está debajo de la silla
The dog is under the chair
We express location with prepositions, which is a temporary state, that’s why the verb to be ESTAR is used.
The cat’s location will change in the future, it is not a permanent location it has to be expressed with the verb ESTAR
El gato está al lado del sofa
The cat is beside the sofa

El libro está en la mesa
The book is on the table

El libro está sobre la mesa

El lápiz está entre el libro y la regla
The pencil is between the book and the ruler.
The preposition DE and the definite articles.
The word DE, means of or from in English. We usually use the definite articles EL, LA, LOS, LAS after the preposition DE, in special with prepositions combined such as: lejos de, cerca de, etc.
El gato está debajo de la silla
The cat is under the chair
We use the form DEL which is the combination of DE + EL= DEL.
DEL
la chaqueta está dentro del regalo.
The jacket is in the present.
We use DEL, due to el regalo (present) is a masculine singular noun.
DE LA
El reloj está encima de la silla.
The clock is above the chair
We use DE LA, due to la silla (present) is a feminine singular noun.
DE LOS
La manzana está al lado de los libros
The apple is beside the books
We use DE LOS, due to LOS LIBROS (books) is a masculine plural noun.
DE LAS
Los niños están detrás de las niñas.
The boys are behind the girls.
We use the DE LAS, due to las niñas is a feminine plural noun in Spanish.
