Immigrant Experiences

Start

The Chinese Exclusion Act

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 marked the moment in U.S. legislative history where immigration from a particular nationality was prohibited. Specifically, the law banned individuals identified as Chinese laborers, encompassing both skilled and unskilled workers as well as those employed in mining, from entering the United States.

I think that this law is unfair because the people who can't enter the country were judged based on an ethnic group and not there skills.

The Gentlemen's Agreement

The Gentlemen’s Agreement of 1907 was a diplomatic understanding between the United States and Japan. Under this agreement, Japan promised to refrain from giving passports to emigrants destined for the United States, with exceptions made for specific groups such as business and professional individuals. In exchange, President Theodore Roosevelt of the United States promised to advocate for the reversal of a

discriminatory policy in San Francisco, where children of Japanese descent were segregated from their white peers in schools. I think that this is a good comprise even though it's still not fair for the Japanese that are now trying to emigrate.

Immigration Act of 1924

The Immigration Act of 1924 introduced restrictions on the arrival of immigrants into the United States by implementing a national origins quota system. This system allocated immigration visas to only two percent of the population of each nationality present in the United States according to the 1890 national census.

I think that this is not fair because two percent is very few and everybody should have his chance to prove that he can be a go citizen.
