Blood Glucose
Content: State the normal levels of blood glucose, outline hypoglycemia & hyperglycemia, explain transportation of glucoseLanguage: Read and Write about blood glucose and its transportShare in cooperative groups about blood glucose and its transport
Objectives:
01. RESUME
Normal levels of blood glucose at rest
The human body normally keeps blood glucose levels very stable at 4.mmol/L - 4.5 mmol/L
Hypoglycemia
- Also known as low blood sugar this is caused by skipping a meal, excessive exercise,
- In diabetics it causes high insulin levels
Hyperglycemia
- Also known as high blood sugar this usually develops slowly. It can take several hours or days
- Infections can cause this
- In diabetics it causes low insulin levels
TRANSPORTATION OF gLUCOSE
glut 4 & glut 1: pROTEINS IN CHARGE OF THE TRANSPORT OF GLUCOSE IN THE CELLS
whERE
Muscle fibers contain GLUT 1 and GLUT 4 proteins to move glucose into muscular cells
At Rest
Most glucose will travel through the GLUT1 transporters
GLUT 4 AT REST
GLUT 4 transporters are inside intracellular vesicles they allow for greater glucose movement into the cell this is stimulated at rest after eating and there is a rise in insulin
GLUT 4 During physical activity
They will be stimulated without insulin during physical exercise this is due to the stimulation of calcium ions.
