On the afternoon of Holy Monday, a special tradition is celebrated in Bethany, the village of Martha, Mary and Lazarus: the blessing of oils, aromatics and nard. This ceremony recalls three events: the foot-scenting gesture made by Mary, the honor bestowed on the dead Jesus by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, and the gesture of the three women who brought the aromatics to the empty tomb after the Resurrection.

On Saturday morning, a unique event happens at the Holy Sepulcher: Jerusalem celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. This is the privilege the Church in the Holy Land has every year for reasons related to the Status Quo. After the reading of seven readings and seven Old Testament psalms, the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land ring the bells in celebration. The Easter Gospel is proclaimed in front of the entrance to the empty tomb. As on the following day, Sunday morning, when a cloud of incense welcomes the Patriarch of Jerusalem of the Latins who celebrates the pontifical Mass and leads the solemn procession around the shrine.

On Palm Sunday afternoon, we remember the Lord's entry into Jerusalem, retracing the route Jesus took to the Holy City, from the sanctuary of Bethphage on the Mount of Olives to the courtyard of St. Ann's Church, passing through St. Stephen's Gate.
On the morning of Holy Wednesday, the Column of the Flagellation of Christ, a precious relic now kept in the Chapel of the Apparition, is venerated at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. Originally located at the Upper Room and worshiped at dawn on Good Friday, only in the 14th century was the column transferred to the Holy Sepulcher.

"Along the way they came on a man from Cyrene named Simon and made him carry Jesus’ cross." Matthew 27:32
On Holy Thursday, we enter into the Easter Triduum. Early in the morning, faithful and pilgrims can witness the peculiar blessing of the holy oils for catechumens, priests and the sick in front of the Wayside Shrine of the Holy Sepulcher. In the afternoon, the Gospel episode of the Last Supper and Foodwashing, which, according to tradition, took place in the Upper Room, located on Mount Zion, is recalled. In the evening Jesus' Holy Hour prayer is celebrated at the Garden of Gethsemane, where Christ remained in prayerful vigil before his arrest. When the prayer is over, the day closes at the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, where Peter's betrayal was consummated.

On Good Friday, the procession meets on the Painful Way to perform the Way of the Cross, until they reached the Holy Sepulcher. In the evening, at the Holy Sepulcher, on the site where Christ died on the cross, there is a funeral procession. This is a truly unique moment, because in no other country in the world is a similar rite still held: two friars remove the crown of thorns and nails from the statue depicting Christ on the cross and then place it in the shroud. Next, the Custos of the Holy Land sprinkles it with oils and incense and leads the procession to the Sepulcher, where the depiction of Christ is placed.
