Name and explanation

The earliest record of the term Cyprus is very ancient, from the Greek Michenic, ku-pi-ri-jo, meaning "Cypriot". The etymology of the country’s name is still unknown.

Location in the map of Europe

Cyprus is the third largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean and a member state of the European Union since 2004. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt and east of Greece.

Flag and symbols of the country

The flag of Cyprus is one of the official symbols of Cyprus. The flag features a design of the entire island, with two olive branches below. The olive branches signify peace between the Turks and the Greeks. The flag map is in an orange-copper color, symbolizing the large deposits of copper ore on the island.

Language and currency

Cyprus has two official languages, which are Greek, which predominates in the southernmost region of the country, and Turkish, spoken in the northern region. The official currency of Cyprus is the Euro, but it is still possible to see the old currency circulating, the Cypriot lira.

Apart from the capital, Athna, Larnaca, Limassol, Mari, Nicosia, Ora and Paphos are the main cities of Cyprus.

Capital, important cities and main tourist attractions

The capital of Cyprus is the district of Nicosia. Some of its main tourist spots are: the Hagia Sophia Church, the Presidential Palace, the Cyprus Museum and the Old Town of Nicosia.

Political System

Cyprus operates as a presidential republic with a system of government characterized by a separation of powers among executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The President is both the head of state and government, elected by popular vote for a five-year term. The unicameral legislature, known as the House of Representatives, consists of 80 members elected to five-year terms through proportional representation. The judiciary is independent and operates separately from the executive and legislative branches.

Koupes, is a street food we find in Cyprus, which is served as a snack, party finger food or as part of a mezes dish.

Lountza and halloumi cheese sandwich is a simple and nutitive dish, which can be eaten in practically any time of the day. Besides not having expensive ingredients, it is also easy to prepare this dish.

Gastronomy

Tiropita is a pastry of Greek origin made with filo pastry and filling of feta cheese and eggs, it is very common to see the tiropita on the beaches of Cyprus.

Problems that the GOALS could solve

One significant problem in Cyprus that the Sustainable Development Goals could help address is the ongoing issue of intercommunal division and conflict between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The SDGs, particularly Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, can provide a framework for fostering reconciliation, building trust, and promoting dialogue between the communities. Cyprus can work towards achieving a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable society.

Summary

With this work we conclude that Cyprus is a great country to go to the beach, with a very rich gastronomy and with several tourist attractions. Has some negative points, such as the internal conflicts of the country and the fact that it is more isolated, this being an island. In short, it’s a great tourist country.

Thanks!
