Racial stereotypes

What is RACISM?

Racism is the process by which systems and policies, actions and attitudes create inequitable opportunities and outcomes for people based on race. Racism is more than just prejudice in thought or action. It occurs when this prejudice, whether individual or institutional, is accompanied by the power to discriminate against, oppress or limit the rights of others.

HOW WAS IT BORN?

For thousands of years, people didn’t categorize humans by race. They were aware of differences and didn’t see everyone as equal, but the concept of race didn’t truly develop until the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the 16th century. Slavery had existed before, but many people worried about the practice’s moral implications. When the demand for enslaved labor increased in the 17th century, white Europeans and Americans needed a justification for slavery. They found one in the form of “race.”

Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation.

what is discrimination?

The theories of discrimination

Discrimination factors change in different places and times. The possible factors of discrimination are infinite, but those recognized by Italian law are: gender, ethnic origin, belief (opinions, faith, religion), sexual orientation, age, physical or mental disability

The stereotyping may be used for humor in jokes, and/or may be associated with racism. National stereotypes may relate either to one's own ethnicity/nationality or to a foreign/differing one. Stereotypes about one's own nation may aid in maintaining a national identity due to a collective relatability to a trait or characteristic, referred to as national character.

Racial stereotypes

Racial stereotype involves part of a system of beliefs about typical characteristics of members of a given ethnic group, their status, societal and cultural norms.A national stereotype does the same for a given nationality.

the penalty

If such incidents occur, the following penalties are foreseen: imprisonment of up to one year and 6 months or a fine of up to 6,000 euros for anyone who incites to commit or commits acts of discrimination based on such reasons.

THE LAW

Today, the art. 604 of the criminal code punishes anyone who propagates ideas based on racial or ethnic superiority or hatred, or incites to commit or commits acts of discrimination for racial, ethnic, national or religious reasons.

Ways to fight discrimination and hate:1. Celebrate other cultures 2. Teach children kindness and how to talk about differences 3. Support human rights organizations (like UNICEF) 4. Learn to regonise and understand your own privilege 5. Call out racist jokes or statements

How would we resolve this problem

We can fight this problem by including people who are victims of discrimination and racism.
