The cognates established are broken down into three areas of knowledge: Arts & Humanities, People & Society, and STEM. These general education courses allow students the opportunity to explore other course options within the university. Throughout this training, we will show you how to declare a cognate and what is required to satisfy the requirement.

The Three Areas of Knowledge

Arts & Humanities

Three courses are needed to complete the requirements

The arts & humanities area of knowledge allows for students to explore courses that range from museum history, religion and so much more.

People & Society

The people & society area of knowledge allows for students to explore courses in politics, meteorology, languages and so much more.

STEM

The STEM area of knowledge allows for students to complete their trasitional STEM based courses.

There are TWO kinds of Cognates

Thematic Cognates VS. Individualized Cogantes

Individualized Cognates

Individualized cognates allow students to build their own cognates by selecting what courses they would like use. They must still take three courses from each area of knowledge. Students can only select courses that have been approved for the selected areas.

Thematic Cognates

  • Thematic Cognates are pre-built. They provide the students with the opportunity to select a topic and complete the courses that full under that topic. Once a student selects a thematic cognate, they can only take the courses that are listed under that subject to complete the requirement.
