What is mental health?
Mental health is a state of mind characterized by emotional well-being, good behavioral adjustment, relative freedom from anxiety and disabling symptoms, and a capacity to establish constructive relationships and cope with the ordinary demands and stresses of life
INTRODUCTION
Technology indeed plays a big role in our lives, it does bring numerous benefits and it is useful for all kinds of people,no matter the age and gender. However, there are still disadvantages that might affect our lives in the not the most positive way, such as a mental health issues.
A 2018 Pew Research Center survey of nearly 750 13- to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost constantly and 97% use a social media platforms, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat Numerous studies show that higher levels of social media use among children and adolescents are linked to adverse effects, including depression and anxiety, inadequate sleep (which can disrupt neurological development and lead to depression and suicidal behaviors), low self-esteem, poor body image, eating disorder behaviors and online harassment. In my research I aim to explore to what teenagers' mental health is sensitive to communications that are happening on the internet platforms
The reason behind my selection of this subject matter is to spread awareness on possible problems that could be encountered by teenagers when using social media. and most importantly to check the claims made by adult's concernings about social media.
why is it important to know?

Social media can provide multiple positive aspects for teenagers, such as reducing a feeling of isolation, like, for example, during COVID-19 and quarantine when people were locked at homes without access to real-life socialization. Social media was the only way for people to keep updated on each other. It has mitigated feelings of loneliness and anxiety. "Online social support has received growing scholarly attention" (Walther & Boyd, 2002). "In contrast to face-to-face communication, computer-mediated technologies can bring people of similar stressful experiences together and offer them a strong sense of community" (Chung, 2014)

Also, social media can be helpful when speaking about global world problems or exposing political problems, such as, for example, military conflicts. Due to the high level of propaganda in some countries, the citizens are not being aware of what happening. So, the use of social media in this case could reduce the impact of propaganda on teenagers, which can help in forming a personal political point of view. Moreover, social media is the platform where people often donate money to help others. Below is a list of charities that use social platforms to collect donations: Charity Water, World Central Kitchen, Pencils of Promise, Minnesota Zoo, TWLOHA, Oxfam America, etc.
Moreover, social media is a platform that can spread trends, which could be a positive thing as it increases a boost of motivation. For example, it can motivate people in sports, healthy lifestyle, studying, etc. For instance, Pinterest is an app that provides pictures according to what you might be interested in. Here's an example of motivational influence provided below from "Pinterest". Trends can also be spread through YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc., by influencers. Influencers are people who work and earn money through social media and are mostly active on social media platforms. They use social media every day to express their opinions and critiques on many topics (like lifestyle, health, beauty) and objects (e.g., brands, services, and products). "In 2017, influencer marketing was considered the most widespread and trendiest communication strategy used by companies. Therefore, influencers have been considered by many marketing experts as opinion leaders because of their important role in persuading and influencing their followers" (De Veirman et al., 2017).” Teenagers are affected by influencers since it is important for them to find a role model to feel more confident. "Social media influencers play a greater role in controlling and influencing the behavior of consumers, especially young people and teenagers" (e.g. Marwick, 2015; Sokolova & Kefi, 2020).. All of this could have a positive influence on teenagers' mental health and increase their physical activities and healthy lifestyle in general, which will increase mental stability among the young. "There has been some research on the impact of influencer marketing on children's food choice, with results showing that the phenomenon may be effective at promoting food low in nutritional value among children"(Coates et al., 2019b; Smit et al., 2019)”
However, there are not only positive aspects of social media and its effect on teenagers' mental health, which is an important topic to investigate. Many people have noticed that the impact of social media can be significant. For example, the frequent use of social media can contribute to depression. There is a term called "Facebook depression," which refers to when young users see status updates, wall posts, and photos that make them feel unpopular. Multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media use and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. Additionally, people can lie and pretend to live better than they actually are, and constantly seeing this can trigger feelings of inadequacy and low self-confidence. Researchers refer to this phenomenon as "Facebook Depression," which is caused by addiction to social networking platforms like Facebook. Teenagers may suffer from depression due to excessive use of social media, which can lead to isolation or even substance abuse as they seek to cope with their depression if proper care is not provided for them. (N. Jones, R. Borgman and E. Ulusoy, "Impact of social media on small businesses", Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, vol. 22, no. 4, pp. 611-632, 2015.)
Moreover not only this is a problem of teenagers forming a depression but also the cyberbullying is an often situation in social media nowday, even if it is tue that bulling existed since a long time ago but before social media became a part of everyones life it is impossible for kids to escape bullying even at home, because before you could barricade yourself from your bullies by going home or changing school, now it is harder since in social media you can be disturbed no matter where you are. “According to the recent report published by PewCentre.com, majority percent of teenagers who are involved with social media have been affected by cyberbullying in this digital era. Cyberbullying is a kind of bullying which holds over electronic devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets and computers” (Baughman, Kozloski, Lynar, Pandey, & Wagner, 2018). Cyberbullying means sharing someone’s negative contents, bad photos, harmful and mean contents in social media. Sometimes it can happen through sharing someone’s private information to embarrass or humiliate teenagers (Oberst, Wegmann, Stodt, Brand, & Chamarro, 2017; Darrin, 2017). A study found that texting and social media to be the most commonly used venues for cyberbullying victimization (Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Suicide, Sameer Hinduja &Justin W. Patchin, Published online: 22 Jul 2010) A total of 432 students from grades 7–9 in Canadian schools reported their experiences of cyber-harassment, (21%) have been harassed several times, and a few students (3%) admitted engaging in this form of harassment. In addition, victims of cyber-harassment reported a variety of negative consequences, especially anger and sadness, and had experienced other forms of harassment. (Tanya Beran Qing Li, April 2005)
Another problem with social media is hacking. Most teens use social media to communicate with family and friends, but they may not be aware of the security and privacy settings on these platforms. As a result, they might unknowingly share private information with each other. However, private or personal data, information, and photos can be disclosed by individuals who hack into social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on. In the past, many teenager celebrities' Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts have been hacked by hackers, who then posted their personal photos and videos to the public with the intention of humiliating the individual.” (Ali, Islam, Rauf, Din, Guizani, & Rodrigues, 2018)
Another major issue with the access of social media for teenagers is sexting. Sexting involves sending or receiving sexual content messages, which could be videos or photographs. In the United Kingdom, sharing any sexual content is illegal for anyone who is younger than 18 years old or with someone who is younger than 18 years old. The posting of naked or semi-naked images, videos, or live streams is also illegal in the UK. According to a study, 20 percent of teenagers have sent or uploaded nude or semi-nude pictures or videos of themselves. A 2017 study in Utah of 656 high school students found that 15.8% of boys and 13.6% of girls had sent a sext, and 40.5% of boys and 30.6% of girls had received a sext. 8” (Strassberg DS, Cann D, Velarde V. Sexting by high school students. Arch Sex Behav. ) This could dramatically harm teenagers mental health and also lead to byllying and cybrbullying which lower the confidence and self esteem, which can lead to traumas, problems with socialisation, and more.
My primary research study that I conducted between students age of 14-18 showed that 41% of students use social media for 3-6 hours a day, 29% use their phone for 6-9 hours and 8.3% spend more than 9 hours a day in social media. 58% students state that social media made them feel motivated for healthy lifestyle, 75% expiirienced cyberbullying, 20% admitted that they participated in sexting, 16% didnt want to respond due to the personal privacy, and other 16% said they dont know what sexting is, 60% saying that they felt sad/depressed because of social media, 88% compared themselves with people on internet, 60% said that they feel both; confident and depressed becase of social media, 12% admited that social media made them insecure and 8% state that social media made them boost their confidence
