Maddis, Owen, Lily
The Student Recreation Center is the Department of Physical Education and Recreation. The departments core purpose is to educate, engage and inspire the campus community to live active, balanced lives. Holistic well-being lies at the foundation of our work. Allows accessibility to various facilities & programs that all aim to promote ones well-being and health.
What is the REC?
https://fitnessproject.us/blog/7-benefits-of-a-fitness-community/
The REC is known for its accessibility and beneficial features but how can we encourage others to stay? There are various factors that can impact a students sense of belonging such as gymtimidation, insecurities or lack of motivation. The REC provides programs that motivates students to stay engaged and to build a sense of community. Students quickly find out that the health benefits the gym provides creates a unity between other students, increasing comfortability, sustaining support. would be good to increase awareness on those benefits without being offensive.

How can we create a better sense of belonging at the REC?
Many students struggle with gym anxiety, the REC is very intimidating
Students have different mindsets going into the gym
what WE Already know
The REC offers a lot for people and it is very accessible, but how can we make it more welcoming and keep people to continue going?
The gym should be a place that allows you to be free and express yourself in a positive way as well as being a safe place that you can be comfortable working out in regardless of how experienced you are it should be a safe place that is welcoming to everyone. Sarah expresses in her interview that she has always had a desire to move her body which is why her parents decided to put her into dance which has made her feel very connected to movement. What movement does for her now is make a community where she can move together and connect with another person in a place where she can just be and recharge. Movement is really important for your mind and body. It makes you feel alive and should be something everyone is available to have How to make the gym more accessible- making QR codes, students can scan a piece of equipment if they don't know how to use it, it shows them how to properly use it without hurting themselves and tells them about different workouts you can use that machine for and tells you about what muscles you are using. This way the gym is more accessible to people who want to start working out but are a little lost or maybe don't know how to use a certain piece of equipment.

Article:Finding a Sense of Belonging in Campus Fitness & Rec Centers :by David Vinson, PhD https://pupnmag.com/article/finding-a-sense-of-belonging-in-campus-fitness-rec-centers/
“Most obvious is the benefit to their physical health. With vast and versatile gymnasiums, fitness equipment, aquatic centers, and spaces designed for instructional workouts, our students can achieve their fitness goals. I also want to stress the role that campus-based fitness and recreation centers play in providing for students a safe space to get to know one another.”
