Filmmaker Number 2

Nick Broomfield

“Broomfield’s films have become supreme examples of the director-performer model; he is the undoubted auteur of his films and their very structure proclaim that, without his intervention, there would be no films” Broomfield has a distinct personna that he uses to interview his subjects. His documentaries are as much about the process of making the documentary as the subject of the documentary itself. He often appears in his films (taking centre stage) and “documents” the process of making the documentary as the film rather than the final finished article. The process of construction is fully seen: sound booms, the crew, things going wrong etc. and the audience is aware of the camera as are the subjects being filmed. Stella Bruzzi points out that this can potentially “ fuel the debate around realness.”

Longinotto’s ‘influence’ is invisible in her documentaries, with very little use of voice-over, formal interviews, captions or incidental music. As the ‘eyes’ of her audience, she doesn’t like to zoom or pan. She says she doesn’t want her films to have conclusions but to raise questions.
