How do we choose a name?

When the baby and mum feel ready, our family goes to a special place called the gurdwara for a naming ceremony. We say a prayer and then open an important book (the Guru Granth Sahib) to a random page. The first letter on that page helps us pick the baby's name. Boys get the middle name Singh, which means 'lion', and girls get Kaur, meaning 'princess', to remind us that everyone is unique and valued.
In Jewish families, our names are very special. They might remember someone from our family or have a particular meaning. I am named after my great-grandmother. I was named after her because I was born during an important time called Passover.
In our family, when a new baby arrives, we have a special day at church. I promise in front of everyone to love and take care of my child and to help them learn about being Christian. The Church also promises to support us. It is a day when we also announce the baby's name to everyone.

In our family, we do not follow set rules for welcoming a new baby. We celebrate in our own way, maybe with songs or special words that mean a lot to us. My son's name is after a very loved family member. We gave him both our last names to show everyone is equal.

In our family, we tell everyone the baby's name on a special day called the Aqiqah. My name in Arabic means 'helping to get better.' It is a wish that I will always keep getting better and help make things better for the people around me.
