When Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands, he noted that each group of animals had specific adaptations on each island. Each island has different food sources. Darwin noted that finches seemed to have beaks that worked well for the food that was available on each island. Today, you will do an activity that simulates birds with different beaks trying to survive on islands with different food sources.

  • Find a space where you can place or use two flat surfaces at least six feet apart. These surfaces could be:
  • counters;
  • tables; or
  • dressers.
  • The distance does not need to be exact but use your best estimate.
  • Set the cutlery next to your “nest”.
  • Fill the bottom of the “food foraging” pan with dry beans.
