Machu Picchu is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site located near Cusco, Peru. Cusco sits in the Andes Mountains of South America. A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a place that has a lot of cultural value. It must show the values of a culture and its traditions. To be considered a UNESCO site, a place can be created by humans or nature. Machu Picchu is a mountaintop community. It was built in the fifteenth century by the Inca people. The Inca people were native to South America and had a large empire along the coast of Peru. Many Inca lived in Machu Picchu in the 1400s and 1500s. Some people think that it was a home for royalty. The site had more than 200 buildings. Included in those were homes and temples. These buildings were constructed with large boulders that the Inca cut and fitted tightly together. The Inca carved terraces, or wide steps, into the sides of the mountain for their farms. They grew corn, potatoes, and squash. They also raised llamas and used their hair to make clothing. No one knows why the Inca left Machu Picchu or who first discovered Machu Picchu after the Inca left. Some people believe a man named Augusto Berns saw the site in the 1860s after he bought land close to it. In 1911, an archaeologist named Hiram Bingham visited Machu Picchu. He found more than 40,000 artifacts, or things, made by people from long ago. These artifacts included items such as pottery and tools. Today, people can visit Machu Picchu. There are buses that travel up the mountain from the nearest town. Some people choose to hike instead, which takes about four days. Only a certain number of tickets are sold each day to visit the site. This is a way to help preserve the beauty of Machu Picchu.

Tony Hillery founded a company called Harlem Grown. His company helps schools in Harlem, New York, get access to healthy foods. In 2011, Hillery volunteered at an elementary school in Harlem. He saw that the school did not have many healthy foods for the students and wanted to help. He noticed an old community garden across the street from the school. It had not been used for a long time and was full of trash. Hillery decided to go to the city and get permission to clean up and use the space. When he started, Hillery was not sure what he would do with the old garden. One of the children at the school had the idea to plant something there. Hillery thought that would be a great use of the space, and he got to work helping the students plant a new garden. With hard work and the support of volunteers, he helped the students grow fresh fruits and vegetables. That year, the school planted 400 seedlings, one for each student. Those seedlings grew into plants, and the school collected nearly 40 pounds of fresh produce. Not only did the students learn about making healthy eating choices, but they also learned life skills such as teamwork. They learned to be patient as they watched their garden grow. The project grew into the organization called Harlem Grown. Hillery brought in more schools and found more sites to use for gardening. The farms have expanded to include hens that lay fresh eggs and hydroponic1 systems to grow the plants. The students compost2 food scraps and learn about other ways of growing food in an environmentally friendly way. Harlem Grown grows thousands of pounds of food each year. These fruits and vegetables are given to the students and their families and sold at farmers markets. Harlem Grown is an important part of the community. People can attend festivals in every season. They can go to community cooking nights and taste foods from famous chefs. Children can attend summer camps that teach them to be farmers and to cook healthy meals. In 2011, Tony Hillery’s goal was simple: to help children in his community. He accomplished much more than that with Harlem Grows. He brought the community together.

Many Americans enjoy bananas as a healthy snack or delicious treat. Bananas come from trees that grow in hot climates. The sweet fruit is not the only part of the plant that is useful. The tree has large, broad leaves that are used in kitchens around the world. Fresh banana leaves can be hard to find in the United States. However, some grocery stores sell packs of frozen banana leaves. Cultures all over the world use banana leaves to cook food. The person cooking wraps food in the leaf and ties it together with a strong string; then, the food and leaf are steamed over a pot of boiling water. The banana leaf holds in moisture, making foods like meat tender, or easier to chew. In Asia, many people use the leaves to steam chicken, vegetables, sticky rice, and curries. In Laos and Thailand, desserts are steamed in banana leaves. These sweet treats are prepared with coconut milk, sugar, and bananas. People in India make curries and rice. In Africa, fish and rice steamed in a banana leaf is a popular meal. Polynesians slow cook meat using banana leaves. The cooks lower the meat into a giant pit and cover it with banana leaves. The meat absorbs flavor from the banana leaves. This cooking process takes several hours. In some parts of Mexico, chefs steam tamales in banana leaves. The outside of a tamale is corn dough. The inside is filled with meat and spices. In the northern part of Mexico, the filling includes turkey or pork, chiles, peppers, and onions. After the food is cooked, guests use the leaves as wrappers and plates. Since the leaves are so large, they are perfect for a feast. At South Indian celebrations, guests use giant banana leaves to receive tastes of many different foods. The leaf is large enough to hold the entire meal. Eating food off a banana leaf is also environmentally friendly. Unlike paper or plastic wrappers and dishes, banana leaves come directly from the tree and are biodegradable. Biodegradable means that over time, the leaves break down into soil and help new plants grow. Whether leaves are used to help cook food or used as a plate, their versatility makes them a great tool.

“I can’t believe we only have two weeks to do this project,” Jaylon said as he strolled home with his twin sister, Jayla, and their friends. “That’s not enough time.” Each fall, fourth grade students chose a topic that interested them about the town, such as a person, a place, or an event. They collaborated in small groups to research it and then presented their findings to the class. “My brother always exaggerates,” Jayla said as she rolled her eyes at her brother and nudged her best friend, Maggie. “The first thing we should do is go to the library and learn a little more about our town,” Jayla continued. “That way, we can find an interesting topic.” “Whoa,” said Mason, Jaylon’s friend. “Haven’t you heard the stories? Everyone says there are strange noises coming from the library, and no one knows what’s causing it.” Jayla laughed. “I don’t believe those silly stories. I’ve heard they were made up by people at the library as part of Mystery Month.” “This isn’t one of your mystery novels, Jayla,” Jaylon said, shaking his head. “It’s real life!” Jayla shrugged. “It’s the library. It’s full of books and computers. Let’s just go and do our research.” Mason and Jaylon regarded each other with raised eyebrows but consented to the trip. They arrived at the library, wary, but Jayla led them to the local books section that was a small room near an outside wall of the building. “I’ve never been in this room,” Maggie said, looking around. “It’s spooky,” Mason said, inspecting a collection of ancient-looking objects. “We’ll be fine,” Jayla replied. “But while we’re here, maybe we can get to the bottom of the ‘mystery.’” “I thought you said it wasn’t real,” Jaylon said. “Well, we need a research topic,” Jayla retorted, pulling a book from the shelf and sitting at the table. The others sat down with her, pulling out their notebooks. THUMP. THUMP. “What was that?!” Maggie shrieked. “Just the building creaking,” Jayla explained, trying to conceal a look of concern. SCRATCH. SCRATCH. THUMP. “That’s not creaking,” Jaylon whispered. Jayla nodded toward a metal grate in the wall. “The sound is coming from inside there.” She pulled out her phone and shined the light into the grate. “There’s a bunch of apples and acorns inside,” Jayla remarked. “I think I might have an idea of who’s causing all the trouble.” Jayla motioned for the group to follow her outside. Right next to the library wall was an apple tree and an oak tree. On the roof, a family of squirrels was racing about with acorns in their mouths. “I knew it,” Jayla said as she saw a squirrel squeeze through a small opening in the roof. “The squirrels set up a home in the library.” “Looks like we solved the mystery of the strange noises,” Jaylon said. “Maybe that would make a good topic for a project!”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a machine that "learns" to think like a human. AI is used in many devices, including smart TVs, smartphones, laptop computers, and tablets. There are several different types of AI, including digital assistants. Digital assistants are called "assistants" because they do jobs that may have been performed by a secretary in the past. These jobs include setting reminders, taking notes, and making phone calls. The types of tasks done by a human secretary are generally done in a work setting. The tasks performed by a digital assistant go beyond the office. People use them in homes, schools, and even cars! Many companies offer digital assistants. Some of the more familiar ones are Siri, Alexa, Google, and Cortana. Each of these works in a similar way. People can use their voices to ask their digital assistants to do something, such as make a phone call or send a message with Google. They may even ask Cortana to schedule an appointment—or remind them about one! Digital assistants can remember where a car is parked or order a favorite meal from a restaurant. Some people use their digital assistants in everyday activities around the house. For example, Alexa can play a person's favorite playlist. It can tell a story or turn on the lights in a room. Some digital assistants will even play games with the user. Digital assistants can help people in many ways. Not only do they help with day-to-day tasks, but they can also be useful to people with disabilities. For example, Siri can describe a picture to a person who has difficulty seeing. A person who has trouble typing can also dictate, or speak, an email or message to Siri. The AI will put the words into written form. Some digital assistants can work the other way and convert text to speech. In this way, people can type what they want to say, and the assistant will speak the words. There are some downsides to digital assistants. For example, they do not always work the way people want them to. Some people are concerned about their privacy. Many people have had the experience of talking about something only to see an ad for it on their phone moments later. Others are concerned that people will become too dependent on digital assistants. Some feel like digital assistants cause people to talk to one another less often. Digital assistants powered by AI can help people stay organized, entertain them, and even save time. While there may be some negatives to digital assistants, they may also help ease some of the stress of everyday life.
