DISCUSSION AND SCENARIOS

Practice: Diverse Work Teams

During a meeting, one team member repeatedly interrupts others. You notice that the interruptions mostly happen when women speak. Is this a problem for the team? Is this a problem for the organization? Considering our CORE sessions from this year, how would you address this challenge?

SCENARIO 1

The Challenge of Diverse Work Teams

The Challenge of Diverse Work Teams

Phillip is a job candidate for an open position that reports to you. He discloses during a team interview that he will need accommodations for a learning disability. During a review of all candidates, a member of your team suggests that Phillip may not be able to keep up with the workload and should not be considered a top choice to fill the role. How do you address this concern in the moment? What do you do to fully investigate Phillip’s qualifications compared to other candidates? If you decide to hire Phillip, is there a need to discuss potential accommodations with the full team (in order to head off potential frustration)

SCENARIO 2

The Challenge of Diverse Work Teams

Tim, a junior employee, shares an idea in the team meeting and is ignored. Later on in the same meeting, Kathy, a senior team member, presents the same idea and is praised. Is this a problem for the team? Is this a problem for the organization? As the team leader, would you draw attention to the problem in the moment? Give Kathy feedback later? What would you advise the junior employee to do if this happens again in the future?

SCENARIO 3

The Challenge of Diverse Work Teams

You are working hard to build a team culture that is high-energy and collaborative. You have worked to incorporate monthly team-building activities but you've realized that they almost always involve alcohol or sports. Employees that participate have a great time and they seem to have bonded in a productive way. What issues might this practice cause among the team? How might the organization as a whole be impacted? Use your Emotional Intelligence skills to consider how each team member might feel/react if a change is made. What changes could be made to address

SCENARIO 4

The Challenge of Diverse Work Teams

A Party-Planning Committee has been formed to organize gatherings for birthdays, holidays, etc. The committee is diverse and includes a representative from each generation. For Sarah’s upcoming birthday, these ideas have been suggested:
  • an after-hours gathering on a day that works for everyone
  • lunch off-site for anyone who is available next Tuesday
  • cake and ice cream in the breakroom at 12:00 Friday (Sarah’s actual birthday)
  • a celebration in line with Sarah's cultural and religious views
  • a card signed by the group and placed on the employee’s desk at some time during the day
The committee can’t agree on which is best. As the manager/leader, how would you mediate the conversation and come up with a solution? What's the first question you should ask?

SCENARIO 5

Small groups Rotate to each station 7 minutes
  • What did you learn? (key take-aways from the session)
  • What have you used? (strategies/lessons you've practiced at work)
