Roy Clay Sr., known widely as the “Godfather of Silicon Valley,” is best known for developing new software for HP computers and paving the way for other African Americans in the tech industry. Growing up in Kinloch, MO, his achievement in high school led him to an academic scholarship to St. Louis University.
Not only did he develop the software for the 2116A computer, but he also was the director for the first HP Research and Development Computer Group. After working for HP, Clay went on to create his own company, ROD-L Electronics. ROD-L became a world leader in developing electrical safety testing equipment.
Born in Kinloch, Missouri in 1929, Clay grew up in the Jim Crow days of the South in a home with no indoor plumbing. A good student, he was the first African American to graduate from St. Louis University in 1951 when there was no such subject as computer science.
Roy Clay Sr. is an American computer scientist and inventor. He was a founding member of the computer division at Hewlett-Packard, where he led the team that created the HP 2116A. He is the Chief Executive Officer of ROD-L electronics and has been involved with the development of electrical safety equipment.
