Persia became a conduit for ideas and products that passed among the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, and India. In time, distinctive Persian religious beliefs emerged, in particular Zoroastrianism, whose monotheism exerted a profound influence on the three monotheistic world religions that followed: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

When the Achaemenids of Iran conquered Mesopotamia, they adopted the Mesopotamian system of government, in which governors administered outlying provinces for the central government (an example of cross-cultural interactions!). At its peak under Darius I, the Persian state extended from Egypt and the Aegean Sea in the west to the Indus River in modern day Pakistan, a distance of 3,000 kilometers!
